Pipeline Dent Assessment Solutions using Level 3 Applications

Recorded on Thursday October 20, 2022, 12:00 – 1:00 pm Central

Presented by Brian Dew, Arash Ilbagi, and Amin Eshraghi

The API RP 1183 provides guidelines for the assessment of pipeline mechanical damage features which includes both a Level 0 screening and Levels 1 and 2 fatigue life assessments. It also provides geometric criterion for the dent interacting with secondary features such as weld and corrosion. The RP is however limited to the assessment of:

  1. Single peak dents with smooth at an angle less than 30-degree w.r.t to the pipe axis,
  2. Dent subject to internal pressure loading, only,
  3. Dents on straight pipe only, and
  4. Fully restrained/unrestrained dents.

Many field dents are multipeak or kinked dents (or a combination of both) and sometimes interact with a gouge/crack. In addition, it has been shown that API RP 1183 can provide a very conservative assessment for non-injurious single peak smooth dents. For these scenarios, the API RP 1183 assessment is not applicable, and a detailed Level 3 assessment is required.

This presentation provides an overview of the advanced pipeline mechanical damage assessment techniques which can be successfully applied to complex shape dents, dents with cracks, and dents with combined loading scenarios. Some examples are:

  1. Dent on welds,
  2. Dent with cracks and gouges,
  3. Dent under axial loading, surface loading, and thermal loading,
  4. Multi-apex and/or kinked dents, and
  5. Dents at angle to the pipe axis.

In addition, features such as buckles and wrinkles can be assessed using the present validated Level 3 FE tool. The API RP 1183 does not provide any guideline to distinguish between a dent and a wrinkle and sometime wrinkles/buckles are incorrectly assessed as a dent using the API RP 1183. The topic is relevant to inspectors, gas and liquid pipeline operators, ILI vendors, and pipeline integrity analysts.

This interactive webinar will allow attendees to ask questions. We look forward to seeing you and having an active discussion.

Application of API 579 Level 3 FFS Assessments to Many Types of Pipelines

Recorded on Wednesday September 14, 2022 at 11 AM Central

Presented by Alex Tatarov and Arash Ilbagi

The API 579/ASME FFS-1 Fitness-for-Service (FFS) Level 2 approach is typically used for assessing pipeline anomalies/conditions found by different types of non-destructive examination devices and tools. When the level 2 assessment fails, repair, re-rating or Level 3 assessment is to be performed. In many cases, repair or rerating are either impractical, impossible, or extremely costly so a Level 3 assessment is the only option to determine if a pipeline can continue to be operated safely without downtime. The current presentation provides an overview of successful application of API 579 Level 3 assessments for anomalies, potential defects, or conditions that have been found in steel pipelines. The examples will include:

  • Ovalities
  • Bulges and dents, including bullet dents
  • Lifting of pipelines containing defects
  • Road/railway crossings
  • Girth Welds (GW) and Electrical Resistance Welds (ERW) with crack-like indications located within different misaligned geometries
  • Effects of ground movement

The topic is relevant to inspectors who want to see how findings during the inspections are assessed to allow the asset to continue its service. They are also relevant to our engineers who want to learn more about fitness for service assessments.

Advanced Ultrasonic Imaging for Challenging Inspections

Recorded on Wednesday November 10, 11:00 AM Central

Presented by Dr. Jonathan Lesage and Dr. Mohammad Marvasti

Quantify the extent of HTHA, Creep and In-Service Cracking with greater confidence utilizing new technology.

Some of the most challenging damage mechanisms to detect and size are also the most costly to miss. Failure to identify and accurately quantify the extent of High Temperature Hydrogen Attack (HTHA) , Creep damage or in-service cracking can result in catastrophe, while misidentifying these flaws can lead to service interruptions and expensive, unnecessary repairs. Acuren’s Application Development Group has developed an advanced imaging technique, called the Phase Coherence Total Focusing Method (PCTFM) which can help to confirm, further characterize and more accurately size certain types of insidious defects, once identified by standard techniques.

Workface Transformation – Going Digital at Site

Recorded on Thursday August 26, 11:00 AM Central

Are you hearing the words “digital transformation” and “workface productivity” a lot these days? Are you interested to learn what this means onsite for your NDT inspection programs?

Through partnering in the digital transformation journey with many customers, we have found the following commonalities in the initial stages:

  • They are curious about what sort of productivity gains can be realized
  • They wonder if these solutions are right for THEIR project or site
  • They are a little confused about how it all works

Please join us as we host a webinar to answers these questions and more. Our Acuren experts from across Canada and the United States will join forces to present how we are solving challenges for our customers through this digital evolution.

You will learn about ARES, which is our digital platform, utilized by our infield inspectors directly at the workface to realize productivity gains, shift data collection and report in near real-time. ARES is highly customizable, ensuring alignment to any regulatory or client inspection program requirements.

You will also learn about AcuView, which is a platform that connects our infield inspection services, providing remote analysis, interpretation and reporting of digital inspection information. By shifting the analysis from the workface to our remote service team, our infield inspection teams can take advantage of maintaining a higher level of field inspection productivity while remaining connected to near real-time analysis.

Line pipe longitudinal weld seams may contain anomalies due to the manufacturing process. These anomalies often relate to the specific welding process that is characterized by the era of pipe manufacturing. Specific regulations in the United States and general regulation requirements in Canada require integrity assessments to be made to address potential seam-defect problems, particularly in low-frequency-welded ERW (electric-resistance-welded) pipe materials. This webinar will discuss the benefits of laboratory characterization of such anomalies to complement inspection and monitoring of these ERW seams. The characterization of such anomalies can be the basis for the assessment of integrity of these weld seams. The presenter is Frank Gareau, VP Engineering, Skystone International, an Acuren Company.

Advanced Diagnostics – A Stepped Approach

Presented on June 11, 2020 – 11:00 AM Mountain

Presenter – Andrew Costain, GM Reliability Engineering

In the current maintenance and reliability landscape, our industries are technology rich, with many tools and ‘smart systems’ to utilize. The focus has, in some instances, become symptom based, monitoring and forecasting EOL for components. At times, maintenance and operations lose focus of the ‘big picture’ and how different components interact and impact each other. Advanced Diagnostics is the deeper look for cause and effect, and where unwanted input energy enters the system, not solely focusing on the ‘weak link’ where failure often occurs. This webinar walked through a stepped approach to using Advanced Diagnostics, how to determine the proper test scope, testing techniques and a few real‐world examples; equipment symptoms, failed correction attempts, application of Advanced Diagnostic Techniques, results and implemented corrections. Our presenter was Andrew Costain – GM, Reliability Engineering, who has over 20 years in the industry.
