Failure Analysis & Material Evaluation of Pipelines
Owners manage the integrity of above-ground and buried pipelines with numerous systems and processes. However, there can be unforeseeable circumstances or system breakdowns that precipitate failures of piping and auxiliary equipment. Acuren’s highly experienced engineers can perform failure analysis, evaluate material properties, and suggest alternatives to materials, and testing/monitoring procedures to help owners prevent future occurrences. As part of the failure investigation and product evaluation, engineers assess the components in the field and/or laboratory which may include:- A detailed analysis of pipeline fracture surface to determine failure mode/mechanism to determine if the pipe meets the specified mechanical and chemical properties with laboratory testing
- Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy to evaluate material microstructure, flaws and fracture surfaces
- Determining the presence of bacteria involved in microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC)
- Identifying type of corrosion scales and foreign debris using X-ray diffraction (XRD) or energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy
- Performing burst testing of pipe to predict failure pressures, strain and fracture mode
- Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) testing to determine critical allowable flaw sizes in pipe welds Provide independent failure analysis and reports for regulatory bodies
The Acuren Advantage for the Pipeline Industry

Pipeline Inspection & Testing Technology
Acuren offers a range of Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) services utilizing the latest in phased array technology combined with advanced pulse-echo techniques and Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD) to provide the most flexible inspection solution available today. This combination of the latest technology and software results in AUT being recognized as the most accurate method of detecting, sizing and repeatability of weld flaws for a fast and accurate assessment of welds in high-production environments. TrueView Pipe TrueViewPipe incorporates the latest technology and software to provide the solution for high-speed AUT girth weld inspection. The system was designed to address issues and complaints from technicians within the industry, such as scanner weight and lack of configuration. Enhanced instrument performance with scalable phased array capabilities allows the system to conduct challenging inspections such as those encountered with cladding, dissimilar metal welds and heavy wall pipe. The innovative software provides operators with rapid set-up and streamlined acquisition with all the tools needed for analysis, reporting and raw data storage. The TrueViewPipe is the future of the girth weld inspection industry. XPRESS Scan Digital Radiography System Acuren is introducing, the latest technology to the pipeline industry for examination of girth welds. Xpress Scan – Scan Digital Radiography (SDR) provides instantaneous results, as it scans circumferentially around the pipe utilizing a stop and acquire motion that is less susceptible to image vibration. The Xpress Scan uses advanced X-ray generation and detection technology to produce true Digital Radiography where the X-ray image is displayed, analyzed and digitally stored as the image is being captured. With the highest resolution, faster cycle times, immediate results and no impact on the environment. The Xpress Scan is available from Acuren in two basic configurations: Fully External Double Wall Single Image and Internal Crawler-BasedSingle Wall Single Image systems. Digital Radiographic images are acquired and interpreted in real-time then archived to a database for storage of the inspection reports. The Xpress Scan Digital Radiography system provides:- Lower inspection costs by eliminating consumables, film processing equipment and film storage facilities
- Compatible with gamma isotope, X-ray source and X-ray crawler
- Wireless system that is lightweight and portable
- Immediate inspection results are obtained in real time making it easier to communicate welding issues for correction to avoid more defects and virtually eliminates the possibility of rework.
- DICONDE compliant images
- No environmental impact
