TEI Analytical Services, Acuren’s sister company, late last year completed a transmission pipeline project that covered more than 250 miles of 36” pipe. The 10-month Ohio and Michigan pipeline construction project included Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) and Radiography (RT) testing.
The project was created to support additional pipeline transportation infrastructure needs in Ohio, Michigan and Ontario, Canada. The additional infrastructure will support the growing demand for clean-burning natural gas and also offset the decline in traditional western Canadian supplies.
To meet this need, our client was tasked with constructing an interstate natural gas transmission pipeline of more than 250 miles of 36” diameter to deliver 1.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of clean-burning natural gas from receipt points in eastern Ohio to existing pipeline system interconnects in southeastern Michigan.
TEI, the Washington, PA based company, provided support in inspecting the new construction installation and tie-ins. TEI supported the vast project with 90 employees that included AUT crews for automatic welding, radiography crews for tie-in welds and Level III UT & RT personnel to audit the results. Along with providing industry leading personnel, TEI used the latest technology and equipment including an advanced AUT zonal inspection system.
Automated Ultrasonic Testing was used because the construction contractor used an automatic welding process on the project. AUT is the preferred method of inspection for automatic welds due to the weld bevel design and the inherent fusion type defects you commonly get with automatic welding. These fusion type defects are difficult to see with conventional radiography.
Acuren would like to congratulate TEI for completing the project successfully on time and on budget. To learn more about TEI’s services contact TEI today at bbusch@teiasi.com or 1.800.542.0399.
