Elevating Gate Station Engineering

Project Overview

To help meet growing energy demand, Acuren provided engineering and design services for a portfolio of gate station projects. These included construction drawing packages for both new builds and replacement stations across a major utility network.

Project Impact

  • Enabled the operator to move forward despite limited internal engineering capacity
  • Delivered customized station designs that exceeded field team expectations
  • Supported construction of multiple compliant, efficient stations, with more underway

A Smarter Approach to Station Design

A Midwest natural gas distribution operator needed a partner to turn high-level plans into fully developed engineering packages. Facing internal resource constraints, the operator brought in Acuren’s Integrity and Design Team, along with a trusted utility engineering partner, to support a series of regulator station replacement and addition projects.

Acuren stepped in with a solution that prioritized accuracy, communication, and responsiveness. Our team worked closely with the client’s internal teams to translate early-stage concepts into detailed designs, meeting all project milestones and performance expectations.

From Concept to Build-Ready Drawings

Each project began with a site sketch, key equipment specifications, and high-level functional requirements. From there, Acuren’s engineering team developed detailed 3D models of piping, pipe supports, and concrete layouts tailored to each station’s unique needs. Once validated, the models were converted into 2D construction drawings and bills of materials.

To keep the process aligned, weekly check-ins and collaborative design reviews were held at the 30%, 60%, and 90% milestones. This feedback loop ensured the final designs reflected site realities and met operational needs.

Code-Compliant Results and Continued Progress

All final designs adhered to federal, state, and local regulations, including PHMSA, MPSC, NFPA, and ASME standards. The operator has since completed construction at multiple sites using Acuren’s packages, with additional stations in progress.

Despite ongoing internal resource challenges, the operator continues to make progress on its project backlog by relying on Acuren’s capacity, utility experience, and commitment to responsive design execution.

Conclusion

This project is a strong example of how Acuren helps operators overcome resource constraints while delivering code-compliant, build-ready engineering packages. By combining technical expertise, responsiveness, and a deep understanding of utility infrastructure, we continue to support progress where it matters most.

A mid-size pipeline operator preparing for a system sale needed to rapidly establish confidence in the integrity of a large gathering network spanning more than 6,000 miles. With limited historical data and a firm transaction timeline, the operator required a comprehensive integrity assessment that would meet regulatory expectations while minimizing operational disruption. Acuren partnered with Mid-America Pipeline Construction to deliver a coordinated, end-to-end integrity solution that assessed, analyzed, and rehabilitated the system, positioning the operator for a successful sale.

Faced with anomaly-related pressure reductions and ambiguous ILI results, a client turned to Acuren's engineering team for a comprehensive integrity solution. Acuren managed nitrogen purging, anomaly cutouts, spike and hydrotesting, and pipeline restoration, securing a five-year reassessment interval and re-establishing MOP. Through strategic planning and contingencies, the project exceeded expectations, finishing early and under budget.
