A Career in NDE/NDT

Do any of the following describe what you’re looking for?

  • Skilled lifetime profession
  • Safety critical work
  • Variety in work assignments and work locations
  • On-going opportunity to increase skills and work with new technology

A career in NDT meets all of these criteria.

  • The effectiveness of testing is largely determined by the skill level of the technician. There are well established certification requirements that are based on a large body of knowledge to be mastered by the well rounded technician.
  • The information provided by NDT examinations helps prevent major calamities resulting from the rupture of a plant component, the failure of a safety critical part, or a pipeline explosion. NDT makes the world a safer place.
  • Few professions span the variety of equipment and infrastructure in which NDT plays a critical role. From process industries, such as refineries and pulp & paper mills, to oil & gas pipelines, to rides at amusement parks, to specialty aerospace parts, a career in NDT offers the chance to be involved in many diverse areas of interest.
  • The technology supporting the basic objectives of non-invasive inspection is continually evolving. Much of this technology comes from the medical industry, which provides tremendous R&D resources for digital imaging and advanced ultrasonic equipment that also have utility in industrial settings. There is always something new to learn and specialized techniques to master.

Nondestructive testing has a far-ranging impact.

  • NDT based inspections assist owners of large process industry facilities understand the condition of their plants and what maintenance activities they should initiate to prevent unexpected problems.
  • NDT provides inspection methods to examine safety critical parts for the automotive and aerospace industries. NDT permits a non-invasive look inside the part for defects.
  • NDT is used to inspect infrastructure in North America. Everything from bridges to tension cables in concrete to railroad track are inspected every day using NDT methods.
  • NDT has a significant role in the operation of nuclear and fossil power plants to assess the structural integrity of the plan components and to evaluate the remaining life of turbines, steam generators, condensers and other critical systems.
